What Is a Content Creator, Anyway?

Not so long ago, telling someone you were a "content creator" would usually get you a blank stare, a polite nod, or a quiet "so... you post on TikTok all day?" We’re six years on from there and are now, and being a content creator today is not the same as it was.

Did you know that the creator economy is a massive $230+ billion power house? Being a content creator is one of the most sought-after jobs right now, and it’s no wonder everyone wants a slice of the pie (myself included!).

Maybe you’re dreaming of quitting your 9-5 by building your personal brand or maybe you’re just trying to live your best life as a content creator. Whatever your reason is, we’ll break down everything you need to know about what a content creator is and how you can actually become one yourself!

Okay, So What Is a Content Creator?

Let’s strip this right down: A content creator is anyone who creates content online that people actually want to pay attention to. This can be anything from a blog post, to a poddy (podcast) or a cosy YouTube vlog. If you think of any social media platform and the content you consume on there, you’ll know what a content creator is.

Being a content creator isn't just about hitting "post." There is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure that the content you put out there is consumable and ready for your audience to devour. Essentially, you’re running an entire media company on your own - you’re the director, the scriptwriter, the marketing team, and the customer service department when you receive those comments. Easy!

What Does a Day in the Life of a Content Creator Look Like?

Being a successful content creator doesn’t exactly happen overnight. There is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that go into creating content in a consistent way.  Here’s what the creative process usually looks like behind the scenes:

  • 🕵️ Brainstorming and rabbit holes: Scrolling with a purpose. A content creator spends a ton of time researching trends, stalking search bar suggestions, and figuring out what their audience is currently obsessed with.

  • 🎙️ Making the thing: The actual production phase. Depending on your flavour, this means drafting scripts, setting up ring lights, tweaking microphones, or agonising over sentence structure.

  • ✂️ Editing: Trimming long videos into spicy clips, colour-grading photos, fixing terrible audio, and writing captions that don't sound like a robot wrote them.

  • 💬 Hanging out in the comments: Building an audience isn't a one-way street. A great content creator actually talks back, answers DMs, takes feedback, and builds a real-deal community.

Content Creator vs. Influencer

Okay, so being an influencer is definitely not the same thing as being a content creator. These two have different trajectories and vibes going on.

  • The Content Creator enjoys the craft and the process of actually making the content. Brands hire content creators to make enticing videos, write juicy articles and capture great imagery.

  • The Influencer is all about the audience and lifestyle. Brands hire influencers to leverage their massive following to sell their products or services.

(Can you be both? 100%. But the great thing about being a content creator is that you don’t need millions of followers to be successful.)

So, How Do Content Creators Get Paid?

There are so many different ways you can get paid as a content creator. Let’s take a look at these in more detail:

  • 🤝 Brand deals and UGC: Getting paid to feature products or create custom videos for companies to use on their own pages.

  • 💸 Platform payouts: Monetisation programmes like YouTube's ad revenue or platform creator funds.

  • 🔒 Paid communities and subscriptions: Launching a Substack, Patreon, or private community for your biggest fans.

  • 📦 Selling digital goodies: Selling templates, preset filters, e-books, or courses.

  • 🔗 Affiliate links: Dropping "link in bio" codes and getting a small kickback whenever someone buys your favourite jacket or camera gear.

Want In? How to Get Started As a Content Creator

Don't overcomplicate it - here’s what to do if you’re looking to become a content creator:

  1. Pick your niche: This is the first step. What can you yap on about for hours and hours? What are people constantly asking you for advice on?

  2. Master one platform first: Don't try to conquer TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, and Instagram all on day one. You will burn out. Pick the format you like best (writing, video, or audio) and stick to its home platform.

  3. Done is better than perfect: It’s probably going to feel a little cringe in the beginning and you may feel out of whack. That’s okay! You’ll get the hang of your video editing and how to talk in front of the camera. Don’t stop yourself from posting just because of this. Every content creator starts somewhere!

  4. Focus on helping or entertaining: Always ask yourself how you can serve your audience. Why would someone want to listen to or watch your content?

At the end of the day, being a content creator is about sharing value with your online community. Share your experience and your knowledge with your audience because there will be someone out there who will gain from it. You also don’t need the most expensive equipment out there to start. All you need is perspective, a platform and the willingness to show up consistently.
